Title: Grid of Heights
Post by: roger on May 28, 2013, 03:40:42 PM
Remote sensing techniques such as Lidar produce a grid of height values, which can be read into NoiseMap but not stored in the database.  They are used to create objects such as contours, roads, receivers, etc.

We are currently testing an improvement to the present system which can cope with a grid of up to 5000x5000 (25 million) points.

A grid of points is often better than the alternative of closely-spaced ground contours as it can be used to generate ground profiles in critical areas such as along the top and bottom of ground slopes, barriers and buildings.  This avoids cluttering up the model with irrelevant data whilst taking less space in the database.  However, because the grid of points is not stored in the database, you need to reload it each time you need to get height data from it, eg when creating new model objects.
