I really like the automatic barrier design feature in the old program called Robard. Is there any equivalent in NoiseMap five?
Although the automatic barrier design feature is not currently available, we have tried to make the 'Level adjustment' feature' of NoiseMap five into a useful tool to help you to optimise the height and length of noise barriers.
One way of using this is as follows:
1. Open Parameters >Edit barrier adjustments
You will see 10 levels listed at the left and a height adjustment value to the right.
Enter an appropriate different value for each of the levels, for example:
Level 1 = 0.0
Level 2 = 0.5
Level 3 = 1.0
Level 4 = 2.0
Level 5 = 4.0
Level 6 = 8.0
2. Because the level adjustments are additive, this lets you get any height you want. For example, a 3.5 m barrier would be level 2+level 3 + level 4
3. Now create the potential barrier positions. Make the barrier segments quite short and make them at 0 m above local ground level.
4. Initially, Level adjustment = 1 to all the segments and do a run for critical receiver positions and note how much they exceed the criterion.
5. Now assign a level adjustment of Level 4 + Level 5 (= 3 m) and re-run the critical receiver positions, again noting how much they exceed the criterion.
6. Now go along the length of all the barrier segments. Using your expertise, assign their levels up or down and re-run. Note how much they have changed and adjust accordingly.
You will quickly be able to home in on your preferred barrier heights.
Note that NoiseMap can only have one set of level adjustment values and this applies to all scenarios. However, the values actually assigned to each barrier can be different in each scenario.
So do NOT change the level adjustment values once you have started your design work, otherwise this could throw out the calculations in other scenarios: only adjust the values assigned to actual barriers.
